I have had a lot of people asking about tours at Northern State Hospital and why they stopped and if they can go on the property just to take a look and so on. I would like to explain why;

1) The tours stopped and

2) Why you are not allowed on the property.

I was really upset when I found out that the tours were going to stop at NSH but now that I have thought about everyone involved and the liability that it holds it makes more sense.

The State has closed the buildings ( The Hospital, Chapel(Hub) and the Nurses Quarters, the only buildings we were allowed to have people tour) due to safety and liability issues, from asbestos, lead paint and probably poor air quality.

NSH was a great place to photograph and get some great information about the history but the buildings have just sat untouched for too long. I also know that last winter alot of damage occured in the Hospital( Denny) with the storms and rain.

Now why you are not allowed on the property is because the campus is closed, always has been unless you have a reason to be there. If you do decide to venture and find it ( which, I will not give you the directions, I made a promise to the State and all involved in this) you will be stopped by security and asked to leave, if you get caught trying to get in to any of the buildings you will probably be arrested.

They have on the campus Job Corp, a Maximum Psychiatric ward and a Drug and Alcohol rehab facility so that should explain why you are not allowed on the property without permission. It comes down to safety and patient privacy.

I hope this clears up some questions for those interested in Northern State Hospital.

You can also go to websites found on my links page to find information about the history.

Thanks for everyone’s support and have a fantastic New Year!
